Amex 2/90 rule: check your approval timing

Checked

Applicants commonly report a limit of two Amex credit-card approvals in a rolling 90-day period, including personal and business credit cards. Charge cards are generally treated separately. This is an observed pattern with exceptions. Welcome-offer eligibility and the number of cards you can hold are separate checks.

What does the reported Amex 2/90 window count?

The pattern concerns approvals rather than applications or calendar quarters. Two recent credit-card approvals can keep a third inside the reported window even when only one account currently appears in a wallet.

A recent approval can also trigger the separate reported 5-day credit-card gap. An actual approval date can differ from an opening date; supply the former when available. Amex 1/5 · Applicant reports · Amex 2/90 · Applicant reports

When should you recheck your Amex 2/90 approval window?

Add personal and business accounts and select their full product names. Denials and pending applications have separate event choices. For an opened account, use optional actual approval dates rather than adding the same event again.

Card to check next

Choose the card you are considering. A result for one product does not establish the restrictions for every card from that issuer.

How is the example’s recheck date calculated?

Example: estimated Blue Cash Everyday timing recheck on December 15, 2026. This history uses opening dates as approval-date estimates. Confirm actual approval dates before using that estimate.

Hypothetical approvals checked October 6, 2026
Entered cardDate usedBasisDate plus 90 days
Hilton HonorsSeptember 16, 2026Opening date used as an approval-date estimateDecember 15, 2026
Delta SkyMiles GoldSeptember 26, 2026Opening date used as an approval-date estimateDecember 25, 2026

The earlier approval leaves the modeled 90-day window first. This calculator excludes an approval on its date-plus-90 boundary, then reevaluates the other checks. A later approval remains in the window; the example no longer contains two approvals at that boundary.

Do Amex Green, Gold and Platinum count toward 2/90?

The reported pattern generally covers credit cards such as Blue Cash Everyday, Hilton Honors and Delta SkyMiles Gold. American Express Green, Gold and Platinum charge cards are generally treated separately.

Delta SkyMiles Gold and Platinum credit cards are different products from American Express Gold and Platinum charge cards. Select the full name. An unlisted product leaves product-specific checks unresolved rather than silently establishing its classification. How many Amex cards can you hold?

Applicants commonly report five open credit cards and ten charge or Pay Over Time cards, with exceptions. Personal and business cards count within their respective category. These holding limits are separate from the 2/90 approval window.

Closing an account with a confirmed closure date can remove a current holding. It does not erase the earlier approval from a recent approval window or prior ownership from a welcome-offer check. Amex card-holding limits · Applicant reports · Amex charge-card holdings · Applicant reports

Do business cards count toward Amex’s five-card limit?

Business credit cards participate in the reported combined credit-card holding count and approval windows. Business charge cards belong to the separate charge category. Their personal-credit reporting treatment does not decide the Amex category.

A nonreporting business credit card can therefore affect Amex 2/90 without adding to Chase 5/24. The two questions concern different events and classifications. Amex card-holding limits · Applicant reports · Amex charge-card timing · Applicant reports

Does lifetime-language eligibility reset when 2/90 clears?

No. The approval window concerns recent approvals. A welcome-offer condition may still apply because of prior ownership, an earlier product version or other history named in the offer.

Personalized terms can differ, and an issuer eligibility warning can rule out a bonus. This checker does not establish a welcome-offer reset date. Read the exact accepted terms and review bonus and ownership history separately. What if the opening and approval dates differ?

Keep the opening date for account history and add the actual approval date in its optional field. An approval before account opening is one event, so entering it twice can overstate the window.

When the approval date is unknown, the tool identifies the opening as an estimate. That estimate can move the next checkpoint, and it should be replaced by the actual dated approval record when available.

What if the next card is at another bank?

An Amex result does not clear another issuer’s application limits or inquiry sensitivity. Use the cross-issuer timing comparison to choose the actual products under consideration.

The order examples show how a prior step can change a later check. Projected approvals remain assumptions until they happen; a plan should be rechecked after an actual issuer decision.
